Good Government
Citizens need to have full faith in the
ethics of their representatives and
confidence in their elections. I have
spearheaded reforms, such as eliminating the
much-maligned partisan caucuses and banning
the Frankenstein Veto. I will continue to be
vigilant in building a responsive and
accountable state government.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Prohibiting political fundraising during
the biennial budget process (2007 SB 25):
Harsdorf wrote the bill to prohibit any
incumbent partisan elective state official
from accepting any political contribution
while the legislature is making
tax-and-spending decisions. We need to
eliminate even the appearance of
impropriety. Finally, restricting
fundraising during the budget process would
build incentives for the legislature to
craft a budget in a timely fashion.
Impartial Justice (2007 SB 171):
Harsdorf voted to enable public financing of
nonpartisan Wisconsin Supreme Court
elections. Donors and special interests
should not influence our court system.
Creation of the Government Accountability
Board (2007 Act 1): Harsdorf sponsored
legislation to establish the new GAB by
merging the Elections and Ethics Boards. GAB
will have more independent power to
prosecute wrongdoing, holding Wisconsin to
the most stringent ethics laws in the
nation. This restructuring has been heralded
by reform groups as the most significant
government reform in over thirty years.
ACTION
Responsive and accountable government
• Require voter identification to ensure
elections with integrity
• Ban fundraising during the budget
• Reform campaign finance laws to require
full disclosure
